why we're looking for you

Retool is scaling quickly, essentially doubling headcount since the beginning of 2021.  To support this growth and help us achieve our long-term vision of changing the way software is built, we are now laying the foundation for a world-class Finance and Accounting team.  This team will serve as Retool’s “source of truth,” developing high-integrity financials that provide visibility into business performance, delivering insights that drive strategic decisions, and establishing operational rigor so we effectively manage our cash and risk.  As one of our first accountants, this role will be essential in helping us build and scale this capability.

what you'll do

As senior accountant, you will be responsible for our day-to-day revenue operations and play an integral role in our revenue accounting processes.  You will oversee our invoicing and collections operations, interfacing with our customers, sales team, and other key stakeholders.  You will partner with other members of the accounting team for our monthly close, providing analysis that supports revenue recognition.  We will also look to you to help us build processes, develop controls, and identify opportunities for automation that will help us scale.  Finally, as a fast-growing business, there will be opportunities to lead special projects, which will enable you to expand your skillset while helping Retool build new accounting capabilities.

who you'll work with

You will join a small but growing Finance team that aspires to serve customers across the business with high-quality financial reporting and insights.  You will also partner with teams across the business as we establish processes and the infrastructure required to scale.

in this role, you'll:

  • Serve as accounting lead for our order to cash process, review submitted sales orders, invoice customers, and spearhead our collection efforts
  • Review the Accounts Receivable aging and support recommendations for allowances and write offs as appropriate
  • Work directly with our sales and account management teams to obtain needed data and reporting to support monthly revenue entries
  • Assist the revenue manager with the month end close review process, extracting transaction data and conducting revenue analysis to support accounting entries
  • Prepare accounting entries and reconciliations related to deferred revenue and unbilled entries
  • Work cross functionally to drive process improvements and automation efforts to streamline accounting operations related to revenue accounting and improve the quality of monthly, quarterly, and annual closes including internal controls
  • Serve as point person on sales tax obligations, understanding requirements, working with outside advisors, and implementing a process for collecting and remitting tax
  • Perform special projects, analysis, and ad hoc reporting as needed

the skillset you'll bring:

  • 3+ years of relevant public accounting and/or industry experience
  • B.A./B.S. degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
  • Fluency in US GAAP with the ability to research technical accounting issues
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel and Google Sheets and comfort with pivot tables
  • Prior experience with large datasets and SQL strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientation
  • Ideal candidates will have prior experience at a start-up or other fast-paced environment
  • Experience with Stripe and Salesforce a strong plus
