Strategic Finance

San Francisco

why we're looking for you

Retool is scaling quickly, doubling headcount since the beginning of 2021.  To support this growth and help us achieve our vision of changing the way software is built, we are now laying the foundation for a world-class Finance team.  This team serves as Retool’s “source of truth,” providing visibility into business performance, delivering insights that drive strategic decisions, and enabling us to plan for long-term growth.  This will be our first strategic finance hire and thus a foundational piece of helping us build and scale this capability.

what you'll do

As the first member of the Strategic Finance team, you will be responsible for helping us build the analytical rigor and financial discipline we need to scale Retool.  You will perform in-depth analyses to help us better understand and make investment decisions across our go-to-market, product, and operations functions.  You will also oversee our operating model, collaborating with key stakeholders to set targets for the business and hold ourselves accountable to our goals.  You will work closely with our Head of Finance to develop a regular financial reporting cadence and provide greater visibility into performance for both internal stakeholders as well as the board.  This is a high-visibility role and you will be expected to build strong relationships with executives across the business.

who you'll work with

You will join a small but growing Finance team that aspires to serve customers across the business with high-quality financial reporting and insights.  You will also partner closely with stakeholders across the business, collaborating with them as we develop a deeper understanding of key performance drivers and establish long-term growth plans.

in this role, you'll:

  • Serve as the founding member of the strategic finance function at Retool
  • Develop quarterly, annual, and long-range plans and use them to help guide investment decision-making and resource allocation
  • Prepare deep-dive analyses to better understand the drivers of the business and identify opportunities to improve business performance
  • Partner with leaders across the business, from product and engineering, to GTM, to operations, and support strategic decision making and initiative prioritization
  • Drive projects to evaluate new investment opportunities and create business cases for key initiatives
  • Work with the Head of Finance to establish regular reporting packages, create forecasts, and iterate on the company operating cadence
  • Support the CEO and Head of Finance on communications to investors and other external stakeholders

the skillset you'll bring:

  • BA/BS in Economics, Math, Finance, Engineering, CS, or other quantitative field.  MBA or other advanced degree a plus
  • 6+ years of work experience, preferably in investment banking, PE/VC, management consulting, or FP&A/strategic finance at a high-growth technology company
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills with ability to unearth insights and turn them into recommendations and action plans
  • Highly proficient in Excel / Sheets with strong modeling skills and attention to detail
  • Intermediate SQL knowledge is preferred
  • Ability to effectively build and maintain cross-functional relationships, manage multiple competing priorities, and drive projects to completion
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to synthesize findings and concisely articulate them to an array of audiences
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to adapt to a rapidly-changing environment
  • Strong understanding of accounting (e.g., US GAAP) and corporate finance concepts
