Developers can go deeper from there with custom logic, integrations, and component-level control. The builder meets you where you are.

Enterprise plans can allocate different seat types to reflect how someone uses Retool. Builders are explicitly assigned by admins and can create, edit, and publish apps, workflows, and agents. Internal users are employees who use apps but don't publish changes—they can explore and draft freely without consuming a builder seat. External users are people outside your organization, like partners or clients, who access apps you've built.

Retool has entirely rebuilt the app builder from the ground up. The new builder is AI-native: describe what you need, and it generates a working app, connected to your data, that you can refine from there. Apps built in the previous builder continue to work. When you need to distinguish between them, the previous experience is referred to as the classic app builder.

Retool runs in the cloud or self-hosted in your own VPC. Self-hosted setup takes about 15 minutes via Docker. If your data can't leave your infrastructure, self-hosting is the answer. Enterprise plans support both options.

Retool meets the security and compliance requirements of the most regulated enterprises: role-based access controls, audit logging, SSO, independent workspaces, and full self-hosting. Yes, students and educators can apply for a free Business account. Nonprofits can apply for 25 free seats. Both apply to cloud-hosted and self-hosted plans.

Every Retool plan includes a monthly pool of AI credits—no add-on, no separate billing. Credits are shared across your organization and cover all app building and AI actions.

Enough for real work. A Business plan includes credits for 36–84 apps per month. If it helps to think in prompts: each AI prompt uses about 12 credits, and a typical app takes 3–6 prompts to build. Credits cover all app building and AI actions. The pool works across however your team builds.

Credits renew each billing cycle. The base credits included in your plan are permanent. Bonus credits are included now and may change over time.

Upgrade to a higher tier for more monthly capacity. Additional credit packs are available for purchase to customers on paid plans. Enterprise plan customers can also use their own API key, which does not draw from this pool.

Agents are AI-powered workers that use large language models to complete tasks, make decisions, and automate workflows autonomously. They are billed hourly and do not draw from the AI credit pool.

Different models have different capabilities. More sophisticated models handle complex reasoning and multi-step execution; lighter models handle simpler tasks efficiently. You choose what matches the job.

Yes. You can connect your own API key. When active, AI calls route through your key, and Retool credits are not consumed—you pay your model provider directly. If you use models provided through Retool, LLM costs are included in your hourly rate.
